Hello, my name is Kevin Muffie. I have been an avid gardener and outdoorsman for over thirty years. It was brought to my attention about 5-6 years ago that the bee population has been declining. Honey bee colonies have declined from 5 million in the 1940s to approximately 2.5 million today. Honey bees are responsible for more than $15 billion of crop value per year (Kaplan, 2013). This equals out to 1/3 of the foods we eat, including the $150 billion worth of honey created annually (Sass, 2011). As I rely on the bees to pollinate my plants, I decided to start paying close attention to the bees I encounter. After some close observation, I noticed that I was killing hundreds of bees regularly when mowing my lawn. No one notices the amount of honey bees being killed by the lawn mowers, because they are not looking intently to see what is on the clover they are cutting. Bees blend in with the clover they are diligently working on, so it becomes difficult to notice them from a distance. After coming to this conclusion, I decided to start thinking of ways to help prevent the bees from being killed.
Recently, I created an invention to help prevent bees from being killed by lawn mowers. This invention deals with putting a blower on the front of lawn mowers to push the bees away from clover before being killed by the spinning blades. Clover blooms from May through October, which means honey bees are spending 6 or more months thriving on these plants in your yard. Bees are incredibly absorbed by what they are doing on clover, that they do not pay any attention to the loud lawn mower coming their way. The blower pushes the bees to safety, where they can continue pollinating.
The invention I created is extremely versatile. I have created blower systems for every type of lawn mower. The patent is pending and is ready to be put into action. I will have the product ready to be used by this upcoming mowing season. If you would like to help restore the bee population, please contact me for more information. To get this into action, we need support from bee activists/societies, environmentalists, farmers, and gardeners.
Please contact us anytime! We look forward to hearing from you.
